This fall, ARGOS presents If UR Reading This It's 2 Late, Vol. 3, prominent US-based artist Tony Cokes' first comprehensive exhibition in Belgium. In his work, Cokes powerfully brings together various elements: image, text and sound. This results in stimulating video works, in which questions about truth, social justice and capitalism become central.
If UR Reading This It's 2 Late, Vol. 3 is the final stop on the exhibition's three-leg world tour. Prior to ARGOS, London's Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts presented volumes one and two of the exhibition, respectively. Accompanied by the publication of Cokes's first monograph, the touring exhibition has also been met with critical praise.
"Tony Cokes's canny, unnerving videos look at how media is used, and how it uses us … His videos, spare and chromatically blaring, step back and take a wide view. He's trying to show us who we are. It is not a pretty picture."
"Can any narrative become so fixed, finished, done that subsequent reading is untenable? For Cokes, such completionism is a false idea … While (personal, political) accounts often profess their permanence, imperiousness, and sheer imperviousness to retroactive critique, they can always be chopped and screwed, set to a new tempo and heard afresh."
